SIMCOE—High school filmmakers in Brant, Haldimand and Norfolk will be focusing their lenses on topics that promote health and well-being to capture the newest prize offered at the sixth annual Holy Trinity Film Festival.

Films promoting healthy, smoke-free lifestyles will be eligible for the $100 Healthy Living prize.

The deadline for area high school students to submit their two- to five-minute films is May 15. Entries will be judged and screened at Holy Trinity Catholic High School in Simcoe on May 28, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

“This is a great opportunity for students to make films about topics that have a big impact on their lives,” said Caroline Freibauer, a teacher at Holy Trinity Catholic High School and organizer of the student filmmakers’ competition.

This is the third year in a row that the festival has added to its number of prizes. At last year’s festival, three honourable mention prizes were handed out to recognize films that didn’t quite fit in any of the other categories. A $100 People’s Choice Award also is available, making it possible for festival-goers to vote for their favourite entry.

More than $1,300 in prize money will be awarded by a community-based judging panel. Students can win $500 for first place, $300 for second and $100 for third. There also is a $100 prize for the best film with a Christian theme.

About 40 entries created by groups and individuals from public and Catholic high schools were received last year.

“We are hoping to encourage more high schools to participate this year,” said Freibauer. “It’s a great opportunity for young people interested in film. They get to see their work on a big screen, receive a professional adjudication and possibly win substantial prizes.”
